Temple University Panel Discussion

The project focuses on reducing missed patient appointments in doctors’ offices and hospitals. In its current state, the project uses a web-based platform to communicate with a proprietary cellular IoT device that reminds patients of upcoming appointments and asks whether they will still attend the appointment. The web based system allows doctors to easily schedule patient appointments, and the device is given to patients in-office or mailed to them. The device then alerts patients to upcoming appointments at various time intervals before the appointment. The patient then responds to the reminder by pressing a "yes" or "no" button on the device. For security purposes, the patient is prompted to verify their identity through a fingerprint scanner on the device, which also ensures device interaction by the intended user.Patients are encouraged and reminded to return or bring the device to the appointment, providing an incentive for the patient to show up to the appointment. The device has been designed to ensure reduction of missed patient appointments below 20% and can be given to patients at the doctors discretion. Future development of the device will allow for patient health metrics to be collected through a communication bus and displayed on the web platform for doctors to view remotely.
