ASCE Construction Tech Group / ASHE DelVal Joint Technical Webinar - Philadelphia Public Services Building / New Police Headquarters (1 PDH)

Event Date

Thursday, October 20, 2022 - 12:00 PM

Join us for a joint technical webinar presented by ASCE Philadelphia's Construction Tech Group as well as ASHE Delaware Valley.

The City of Philadelphia began a search for a new location for the main headquarters of its Police Department, the Medical Examiners Office, and several other functions in 2009.After a review of several possible sites, and the start of design work on one of them, it was decided that the former Inquirer Building on North Broad Street, which had been vacated by the newspaper, would provide an ideal and centrally-located place for these purposes. The City moved to lease the site from its owner and began to plan a $250 million renovation and conversion program to accommodate the new uses, which grew to include the main Police Department headquarters, two local Police Districts, a unified police and fire command and communications center and dispatching unit, several Police special units, and the Medical Examiners Office and toxicology lab.The upgraded facility replaced the former Police headquarters in Center City, known as the Roundhouse, upon its opening this past spring.

The Inquirer Building, built in 1924 and listed on the City’s Register of Historic Places, offered several challenges and opportunities for this reuse, and the renovations had to address these needs while keeping the historical characteristics of the building intact and preserved. It has been designated as the Philadelphia Public Services Building to reflect its various new functions.

Messrs. McAuliffe and Mowrer will outline the conceptual planning and design process and go through the process needed to renovate and upgrade the building to suit the often unique needs of the new functions and users.
