TOY DRIVE & TECHNICAL PRESENTATION

Bridging the Centuries:

A Historically Compatible Design for the Irving Street Bridge

Project Description

The Irving Street Bridge in the City of Rahway, Union County, New Jersey, is a historic three-barrel, stone and brick arch structure, built circa 1895 and altered in 1924. Recognized for its engineering significance, it is one of only two remaining stone arch spans in Union County and was deemed eligible for the National Register of Historic Places in 2019. Initially proposed for rehabilitation to ensure the historic structure’s long-term preservation, Tropical Storm Ida in September 2021 caused severe damage, necessitating a complete replacement to ensure a safe crossing. Plans for the new bridge include a two-span, precast concrete structure adorned with an ashlar stone veneer to echo the original design, alongside improved scour protection and modernized road approaches, ensuring the new construction remains sympathetic to its historic setting while enhancing safety features.

Please bring a toy to be donated to Toys for tots, Camden, NJ.
