Repair of the existing, submerged 130 feet high, 1.2-1.6 H:1 V slope, required slope armoring with a 5.6 feet thick layer of riprap, 5-ton capstones, and the installation of two sheet pile walls within 20 feet of the top of the slope. Construction documents from the US Army Corps of Engineers specified the following maximum construction surcharges:0 PSF@ 0 to 50 feet from top of slope, 250 PSF @ 50 to 75 feet, and 500 PSF beyond 75 feet. Because installation of the heavy rip rap, capstones and sheet piling required a 300 ton crawler crane and other heavy equipment, the contractor requested that the engineer perform a series of analyses to demonstrate slope stability under multiple equipment surcharge loads. Following the Corps' review of these analyses, the contractor was granted approval to place equipment surcharge loads with within all three load restriction areas.
