Description:
There is presently little emphasis on designing civil engineering structures for corrosion resistance.The world-wide economic impact of corrosion has been estimated to be 3% of the global gross domestic product; yet in a profession with regimented design processes for load-induced effects, similar design processes for considering corrosion resistance are lacking. This presentation addresses this gap by reviewing: basic scientific principles governing corrosion to develop a scientific foundation for research findings; long-term field data on performance of steel structures in varied quantified environments; field and laboratory assessment methods for corrosion; and practical design strategies for improving corrosion resistance.Audience members will be better prepared to optimize corrosion resistance of their structures, improving life-cycle costs and service lives of civil engineering structures.


Presenter:

Jennifer McConnell (PhD), Bentley Systems Career Development Professor and Director of the Center for Innovative Bridge Engineering, University of Delaware

Dr. McConnell has over 20 years of research experience in bridge behavior, laboratory testing, field evaluation, inspection, long-term performance, design, and analytical modeling of bridges.In particular, her works on steel bridge corrosion and innovative field testing have received national recognitions.Dr. McConnell is an author of numerous academic publications on these topics as well as publications providing updated guidance to practitioners on corrosion mitigation using uncoated weathering steel.Her service roles include membership on the Oversight Committee for the National Steel Bridge Alliance and American Iron and Steel Institute (AISI) Steel Bridge Task Force, the AISI Corrosion Advisory Group, and the Transportation Research Board Committee on Steel Bridges.
