The Flat Rock Dam Betterment Project will reconnect the Manayunk Canal with the Schuylkill River at Flat Rock Dam to improve local water quality.
The work includes the construction of new structures connecting the waterways, improvement of existing structures, and the stabilization and preservation of historic elements at the Feeder Gate House building. A new intake system will control the flow of water into the canal as needed.
The PWD engineer will lead the tour through the site and discuss aspects of design and construction.
Unfortunately, this tour is not ADA accessible but is accessible by public transit via Bus 61 with a 0.7 mile walk or by Regional Rail (Manayunk Station) with a 0.8 mile walk.
Networking social after the tour will take place at Manayunk Brewing Company.
The tour is outside. If there is significant rain forecasted, attendees will be notified, and the tour will be rescheduled. Boots are required, but steel toe is optional. Safety vests are recommended, but are not required, since the tour is outside of working hours. Photos are permitted.
On-site parking accessible by the following:
To access the site, drive over the bridge onto Venice Island by the Leverington Ave and Main St intersection. From Leverington Ave, the road curves to the right and becomes Flat Rock Rd. Follow Flat Rock Rd until you reach the gated entrance to what was the former Paperworks factory. Someone will be at the gate to direct people back to the dam.
There are mulitple options for parking. The access road has paved and dirt sections. There will likely be areas with mud or water that must be driven through. If you are concerned about your vehicle making it to the construction site, then it is recommended to park at locations 1 or 2 and walk the rest of the way.
1. You can park on Flat Rock Rd and walk through the gate to the site (approximately 0.7 miles walk).
2. Turn right after entering the gate. You can park where the two trailers are (approximately 0.5 miles walk).
3. From the trailers, follow the road on the right side of the in-progress factory demolition. The road curves around a wooded area and then opens up to the parking area for the work site.
We will begin the tour from the parking area and walk through the site.
