Prevention through Design (PtD) is an emerging safety management technique in which the safety of construction and maintenance workers is explicitly considered during the design of a project. Also called Design for Safety, PtD is a direct application of engineering codes of ethics relating to social sustainability principles. This presentation will summarize the PtD concept, provide examples from multiple construction sectors, and discuss the relevant portions of the ASCE and NSPE engineering codes of ethics.

* In consideration of our scheduled Thursday, 10/2/2025, meeting conflicting with Yom Kippur, we’re very happy to announce that we were able to collaborate with our meeting venue, Maggiano’s, to secure a different date for the meeting—Tuesday, 10/7/2025. We appreciate everyone’s feedback and patience with the switch as we strive to be as inclusive as possible.
