Project Description

The Route 9 Bridge over Jobs Creek is located in Bass River Township, Burlington County, NJ and was constructed in 1922. Route 9 is an important link for commuters in the area traveling to and from Atlantic City for work and serves as an important connection to eastern shore points during the summer season. This roadway serves as a vital economic link to the nearby areas of interest, including Viking Yacht Company, the Bass River State Forest, and the New Gretna section of Bass River Township. Jobs Creek is a category one waterway and runs adjacent to the Edwin B. Forsythe National Wildlife Refuge.

The Route 9 Bridge over Jobs Creek was recommended for replacement as it was deemed structurally deficient and functionally obsolete due to poor superstructure condition and due to the existing bridge and roadway geometry. The new bridge consists of a Prestressed Concrete Spread Box Beam for the bridge superstructure, a King Pile System with Concrete Tie-Backs for substructure, and permanent Steel Sheet Pile Retaining Walls. This system included semi-integral abutment components and resulted in a jointless bridge system that reduces future maintenance issues.
