Building Information Modeling (BIM) is a set of technologies and processes used to create a 3-dimentional virtual model of a project for the purpose of analyzing, constructing, maintaining, and assessing. This 3-D virtual model contains all project information that may be from more than one source. The information from that 3-D virtual model can be shared, used, reused, and exchanged among stakeholders of the project.
The application of BIM in infrastructure projects is growing both on a state and national level. The Bridge Information Modeling (BrIM) process encompasses multiple industries though its development from survey through design to construction and asset management. The bridge design and construction industry is recognizing the benefits of digital bridge project delivery as BrIM becomes the standard form of project deliverable. A congruent workflow reduces data reentry errors and builds upon established information through the design process and into construction. Bridge owners are interested in those benefits as well including reduction in both initial cost of construction and the whole life cycle cost of bridges; reduction in the overall time from planning and preliminary design to completion for new construction; organized management of existing structures for inspection and maintenance of bridges; and robust data for asset management.
Zachary Ells, PE
Zach is a Senior Structural Engineer in the Bridge Department of the AECOM Philadelphia office with 10 years of engineering experience. He performs structural engineering analysis as well as design of bridge and highway structures. He also provides engineering services during construction including constructability review and shop drawing review. Zach applies Bridge Information Modeling (BrIM) software tools in the preparation of design documents, plan production, analysis investigation, and quantity/cost estimate reports. He also develops and tests workspace and workflow configurations which incorporate varying client standards.
